My dad's brother who was in the middle of the worst (Battle of the Bulge + other horrors = 50% of the young men in his company were killed), brought home a 98. He picked it out because its serial number was the same as their mom and dad's telephone number = what's the odds???!!! He disassembled it, wrapt in in a swastika and shipped it home. Other weapons he shipped back didn't make it. One of his "buddies" stole a set of cased handguns. Luger P08and P38 w/matching ser. numbers, civilian manufacture, officer owner killed, widow gave'em to my uncle (they'd set up a mortar position in her yard). She did want any reminders of that hell. Who could blame her. Those handguns would be worth around $5k today, maybe more -- were in "like new" condition my uncle said.
That Mauser was very accurate. I was 16 or 17, took it out and checked its sight-in. You'd not want anybody shooting at you with that puppy.
